Title: “In a quest of novel antimalarial”
Speaker: Kutub Ashraf, ParaFrap-IRD PhD fellow Medicine Faculty, University Pierre Marie Curie, Paris and Institute Pasteur Cambodia
Hypnozoite mediated relapses compromise Plasmodium vivax malaria eradication efforts. Primaquine, very recently single dose tafenoquine, are the only licensed hypnozoiticidal drugs with however potential risk of fatal hemolysis among G6PD deficient patients and pregnant women. So attempt of new drug discovery is crucial to combat against all future uncertainties.
In our in vitro liver stage assays, we have identified a few compounds that arrested early liver stage development of P. vivax including hypnozoite. These compounds require further validation on whether they also represent a radical cure phenomena (elimination of late liver stage hypnozoites)
This presentation will highlight the basic biology of hypnozoites, joys and pains of liver stage assay and identification of novel compounds targeting these dormant parasites.
