Those recommendations describes how to take bacteriological samples tested in Institut Pasteur du Cambodge. It is addressed to people taking bacteriological samples.

For others bacteriological samples or specific one, you may contact a biologist or get information at our reception.

For all the samples must be indicated systematically on the prescription:

  • First name, last name and date of birth
  • Time and date:
    • of the sampling
    • of the shipment to Institut Pasteur
  • Identification of the medical doctor and of the nurse taking the sample

1. Lipid profile

A strict fasting period of minimum 12 hours is required for a carbohydrate profile (triglycerides, cholesterol proportion).

We recommend to eat a light meal before starting the fasting period.

You are still allowed to drink 1 glass of water.
2. Carbohydrate profile

A strict fasting period of minimum 8 hours is required for the proportion of glycemia.

We recommend to eat a light meal before starting the fasting period.

You are still allowed to drink 1 glass of water.
3. Sperm sample

How to collect the sample
Abstinence before semen collection should be 3 days.
After micturition it is important to wash well the glans before collecting the semen sample.
Sperm collected in a sterile container.
Give preference to collect sperm at the laboratory.

Transport
Bring the container to the laboratory within 30 minutes after collection (go directly to our medical secretary without waiting).
4. Stool sample

The stool sample should be collected, if possible, during diarrhea. Free fiber diet is recommended the day before the sample collecting.

  • Collect the stool in the sterile container provided by the laboratory
  • Label the container with your name, date and time of stool collecting.

Bring the container as soon as possible to the laboratory; otherwise, keep the sample in the fridge.
5. Urine sample

Recommendations for Urine Microscopy and Culture

Please follow these steps :

  1. Have a meticulous wash (of the vulva area for female, of the glans for male) with a cotton pad soaked in disinfectant solution provided by the laboratory (after use, throw the cotton pad out in the garbage, not in the toilet).

  2. As you start to urinate, eliminate some urine into the toilet pan.
  3. Then collect some urine in the sterile container provided by the laboratory and close it carefully.

Recommendations for collecting urine sample for Addis count

Please follow these steps :

  1. Get up in the morning 3 hours before habitual time :
    • Empty your bladder in the toilet
    • Then drink a big glass of water
  2. Label an appropriated container (the one provided by the laboratory or an empty bottle of water) withyour name, date and time of urine collecting
  3. Go back to bed and lay down for 3 hours.
  4. After these 3 hours ( as accurate as possible ): empty your bladder in the container.
  5. Bring all of the urine collected to the laboratory as soon as possible (maximum 2 hours after urinate); otherwise keep the sample in the fridge.

Recommendations for collecting a 24-hour urine sample

Please follow these steps :

  1. After getting up in the morning, empty your bladder in the toilet.
  2. Label an appropriated container (the one provided by the laboratory or an empty bottle of water) with your name, date and time of eliminating the urine on the toilet
  3. Collect all the urine in the container during 24 hours after the beginning of the collect.
    Example: beginning of the collect on Tuesday at 7am
    end of the collect on Wednesday at 7am
  4. Bring all of the urine collected to the laboratory as soon as possible (maximum 2 hours after the end of the 24h period); otherwise keep the sample in the fridge.

6. Sputum collection

For sputum collection, we prefere a morning sputum after getting up and before eating or drinking. If possible, go outside or open the window to take the sample.

  1. Write the name and the sampling date on a sterile plastic container provided by the laboratory
  2. Before taking sample, rinse out your mouth with water (don’t use mouthwash)
  3. Breathe in deeply and cough hard enough until you can expectorate a sputum
  4. Expectorate the sputum into the container
  5. Avoid having saliva in the sample
  6. Screw the cover carefully to prevent leaking. Clean the outer surface of the container
  7. Put the container inside the plastic bag IPC provided by the laboratory and bring it as soon as possible to the laboratory.
