Strengthening Influenza Surveillance in Cambodia: IPC and NIPH Joint Training on Cell Culture and Virus Isolation

From August 4–22, 2025, the Virology Unit of Institut Pasteur du Cambodge (IPC) and 5 persons from the National Institute of Public Health (NIPH) came together for a three-week, hands-on training in Cell Culture, Virus Isolation, and HA/HAI assays for Seasonal Influenza.

The program focused on building practical expertise in biosafety and aseptic techniques, virus cultivation and isolation, monitoring viral growth, performing serological assays, and ensuring proper preservation of samples through freezing and cryogenic storage. Beyond the technical aspects, the training created space for dialogue, shared learning, and the exchange of experience between teams.

By sharing knowledge and working together, both institutions are strengthening Cambodia’s national systems for influenza surveillance—ensuring earlier detection, faster response, and more resilient preparedness for future outbreaks. These efforts contribute not only to national health security but also to regional collaboration and the global fight against emerging infectious diseases.
