Strengthening Regional Capacity for Bioinformatics and Genomic Surveillance

Three researchers from the Disease Investigation Center (DIC) Wates, Indonesia recently completed a two-week training program at the Institut Pasteur du Cambodge (IPC) from 23 February to 6 March. The training, jointly organized by IPC’s Bioinformatics and AI Applications Unit and Virology Unit, combined hands-on laboratory work with bioinformatics analysis. Participants were trained in sequencing library preparation, Oxford Nanopore sequencing, and downstream genomic analysis, including tiled-primer sequencing, SISPA-based metagenomics, and viral phylogenetics. The program focused primarily on strengthening genomic surveillance for avian influenza, while also building technical skills applicable to other agricultural and One Health threats affecting the region. Importantly, this training directly supports DIC Wates in its role as the ASEAN Bioinformatics Reference Laboratory, helping expand regional expertise in pathogen genomics and data analysis. Strengthening these capacities contributes to improved early detection, surveillance, and response to emerging diseases at the human–animal–environment interface. This activity was made possible through the support of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP), part of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Australia.
