DATURA Result Dissemination Workshop -Cambodia

The Institut Pasteur du Cambodge (IPC), through the Clinical Research Group of its Epidemiology and Public Health Unit, is pleased to announce the completion of the DATURA clinical trial, with preliminary findings shared with the Ministry of Health, the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Dermatology and STD, the Center for Tuberculosis and Leprosy control and partners at the dissemination workshop on July 9th, 2026.

This event was co-organized by IPC, the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Dermatology and STD  (NCHADS) and the National Center for Tuberculosis and Leprosy control (CENAT) with the honor present from H.E Dr. Hok Kim Cheng general director of health, Ministry of Health, Assistant Professor Ouk Vichea, director of the national HIV program, Dr. Huot Chan Yuda director of the national TB program and Professor Andre SPIEGEL director of Institut Pasteur du Cambodge. This event providing a platform to discuss the study’s main finding and the implications for clinical practice, national policy, and future research directions.

DATURA is an international Phase III randomized clinical trial funded by ANRS-MIE and  EDCTP2, conducted across Cambodia and five African countries — Cameroon, Guinea, Uganda, Zambia, and Mozambique. The trial evaluates whether intensified anti-tuberculosis treatment and adding corticosteroid during the intensify phase (8 weeks) can reduce mortality among hospitalized adults and adolescents with advanced HIV immune suppression CD4 <= 100 cell/mm3.

During the workshop, the Principal Investigator (PI) and Coordination team presented key results, implementation experiences, and operational strategies developed throughout the study, along with insights on clinical management and case studies, highlighting the critical role of strong coordination, quality data management, and patient-centered care in the conduct of complex clinical research.

The workshop convened representatives from national HIV program, national TB program, NGO partners, including CHAI Foundation, FHI 360 and DATURA study sites: Calmette Hospital, Khmer Soviet Friendship Hospital, Cambodia-China Friendship Preah Kossamak Hospital, NCHADS Clinic 1, and AHF-NCHADS Clinic 3, with a total of 83 participants attending in person and 20 joining remotely via Zoom. This milestone represents a significant contribution to the evidence base for TB management among people living with HIV with immune suppression hospitalized and supports Cambodia’s ongoing efforts to eliminate TB and HIV as public health threats, while reinforcing the value of international scientific collaboration.

We extend our sincere congratulations to all investigators, clinicians, field teams, and partners involved in this achievement, and look forward to the forthcoming scientific publications.
